Transportation is a basic necessity; our current means of it are also a major source of pollution and require extensive and expensive infrastructure. Our ambition is to make Portland car-free by 2030. We have so far three proposals for new systems to accomplish this: Steel Freeways, Airships, and Slidewalks. In addition, the Arcology project will greatly reduce the *need* for transportation, by putting residential, commercial, industrial, civic, and entertainment spaces all in the same building, so that a commute becomes an elevator ride.
